Premodern Travelers around the World: A Routes Project

Hosted by the Global Middle Ages Project, this gazetteer project aims to facilitate the pedagogical exploration of the Global Middle Ages by acting as a clearinghouse for information related to medieval travel routes. During the first phase of the project, we will provide maps that are marked with routes taken by prominent medieval travelers — including Ahmad ibn Fadlan, Benjamin of Tudela, and Rabban Bar Sauma, among many more — accompanied by quotes from their writings associated with specific locations, and key passages and discussion questions for the classroom. During the second phase, we will supplement the project with further research-oriented content, such as manuscript images, lists of extant manuscripts, and records of how these texts were historically disseminated through excerpts and compilations.
