The Kaenteoberi Story: Re-Translating Chaucer
When the sweet rainstorms of April pierce through
The drought of March, deep down to the root
The Kaenteoberi Story takes as its source text a 2007 Korean translation of the Canterbury Tales (published by Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Press, translated by Lee Dong-Ill and Lee Dongchoon) and re-translates it into modern English. It is a thought experiment that asks readers to encounter a Chaucerian text rendered deeply Korean through its transliterations and reference points, and reckon with the cultural politics of translation, literary consumption, and English education.
